Hannah Klamann is an actor from Toronto, Ontario. She started out by gaining experience in creature acting while growing up in a small Ontario town before moving to Toronto. As a teenager she began to focus on dance and then extended her love of performing into acting in 2020, which she has always loved but did not know where to begin. Her natural approach to acting has led her to lead in several screenplays of different genres. She has always had a love and passion for connecting with others through performance arts and will continue on this journey.

What barriers have you faced as a woman in your industry and how have you overcome them?

Barriers I’ve faced in this industry aren’t necessarily so specific to women, but it is the concern of each set being a safe space. When arriving at any set I find it helpful to do a bit of search prior, to be aware of who you’re working with to some degree and to at least be familiar.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received is, “commit to the bit,” and another being, “they want you to be great.” These two things have stuck out to me because while growing up I would easily feel judged or scared to try new things. When I decided to just “commit to the bit,” or “lean into the cringe,” that concept allowed me to really just have fun and try things regardless of the outcome. The more I exposed myself to that idea, the less worried I became about others’ opinions. When I also recognized that other artists within the field “want you to be great,” my perspective walking into an audition or callback was changed from being worried or consumed by self doubt into feeling like we are all on one team rooting for one another.

Why is it important to support women in your field?

It’s important to support women in this field because I believe we all deserve a fair chance and that we are even stronger together! I believe the best person for the role should get the role. Women bring such a nurturing energy that is so valuable when working long hours oftentimes with people you are just truly meeting for the first time.

How do you think we can create a more equitable workplace in your industry?

I believe we can create a more equitable workplace in our industry by truly valuing the voices of the women in this field. There are so many great ideas that come from women in film and I believe the more collaboration with women, the more growth this industry will have! Teamwork makes the dream work!

Name one woman you admire and explain why you look up to them.

There are so many women that I look up to, starting with my mother, sister and closest friends. I truly feel surrounded by such strong, resilient and loving women that have really contributed to shaping me into who I am today. I think all that women are capable of is incredible and I feel we all wear many hats on the day to day. I am so thankful to feel uplifted by the women I know and love.
